Materials Science Scholarship

The Materials Science Scholarship was originally funded by the Golden Gate Chapter of the American Society of Metals. Solano Community College Professor Melanie Lutz has continued the scholarship.

President Obama has stated that Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is key to this country?s economic future. One of the key areas within STEM fields is that of Materials Science. Scientists and engineers are currently inventing thousands of new materials, ranging from synthetic skin, blood, and bone, to substances that repair themselves and adapt to their environment.

Solano Community College is helping prepare students for that future, via its highly successful pre-engineering program. One of the crucial classes in SCC?s pre-engineering program is ENGR 45: Properties of Materials. The Materials Science Scholarship is awarded annually to the student with the highest marks in the class. This scholarship will thereby help prepare the students of Solano County to make contributions to the new and exciting field of modern materials for the 21st century.
