Carmen Camille Cook Johnson Memorial

The Carmen Camille Cook Johnson Memorial Scholarship was established by her daughter Deni Hardng in tribute to her—to her stamina, her imagination, and her foresight.
Carmen Johnson was a reading teacher at Foshay Junior High in South Central Los Angeles for 28 years. She championed knowledge. She didn’t slack in the face of social and family pressures to stay home and be a housewife. She was beautiful, smart, savvy and worldly wise, loving to encourage children and adults. She was fair, disciplined, honest and courageous for the time. She was a liberated woman before Women’s Lib.
